Bill Samuels Sr. reportedly burned the family recipe and started over, swapping rye for red winter wheat in 1953. He also stopped chasing proof and age as selling points and sold a shape instead — the squat bottle, the torn wax. That's the bottle that invented a category, and arguably invented bourbon branding as we know it.
Their tasting notes
Nose: vanilla, wheat toast, red fruit. Palate: soft, sweet, almost no rye spice. Finish: gentle and short — deliberately so.
