Bull Run American Whiskey, Batch 027, is a 16 year old whiskey finished in Oregon Pinot Noir casks at the Portland distillery that bottled it. Pinot is a lighter red than most wine wood used for finishing, so it lends perfume and red fruit rather than heavy tannin, and sixteen years of barrel time supplies the structure underneath it. The nose opens on raspberry, vanilla and old oak; the palate runs to dried cherry, cocoa and baking spice with a soft resinous grip; the finish is long and dry with the wine still hanging around. Neat is the way to meet it, and one large cube opens the fruit.
