Frank August Legacy Reserve is a Kentucky bourbon from a young brand that has built its name on carefully selected barrels rather than a distillery of its own - a route plenty of respected American whiskey houses started down. Reserve bottlings like this one are usually where a house puts its older or more characterful stock, and the result leans rich rather than bright. Expect a nose of caramel, toasted pecan and orange oil, a palate of brown sugar, baked apple, vanilla and cinnamon laid over dry oak, and a finish of char and light leather that lingers. Serve it neat in a Glencairn, or over a single large cube if you want the oak to settle back.
