Malecon Seleccion Esplendida 1982 is a vintage-dated Panamanian rum, drawn from stock laid down in 1982 and bottled decades later. Tropical ageing does the heavy lifting: warmth drives the rum deep into the barrel year after year, so the wood influence is considerable without ever turning dry or tannic. The nose opens on old leather, dark honey and orange marmalade. The palate is thick and layered, toffee, prune, roasted nuts and a thread of tobacco, with soft baking spice underneath. The finish is long, sweet and lightly resinous. This one is for sipping neat at room temperature; a cocktail would bury everything those years put into it.
