About this bottle
Aged 13 months in a blend of American and French oak, Ilegal Mezcal Añejo is a barrel-rested mezcal from Oaxaca, made from 100% Espadín agave at 40% ABV. The brand built its name in the bars of Antigua, Guatemala before bottling in Mexico, and the añejo shows what time in wood does to smoke: maple, clove, and bitter orange on the nose, then dark chocolate and sweet cooked agave on the palate, with the roasted-agave char pulled back into the background. This special-edition release is a slow sipper, closer to an aged whiskey than a cocktail base. Serve it neat at room temperature in a copita, and let the oak and smoke settle before the first sip.
