About this bottle

Bartenders argue about plenty, but Fortaleza Blanco, an unaged 100% Blue Weber agave tequila, sits on nearly everyone's benchmark shelf. At Destilería La Fortaleza in the town of Tequila, agave is cooked in stone-and-brick ovens, crushed under a two-ton volcanic tahona wheel, fermented in open wood vats and double-distilled in small copper pots — the same slow process the Sauza family used five generations ago, with nothing added afterward. Expect cooked agave and lime peel up front, black pepper and wet stone underneath, and a dry, briny-olive fade that lingers well past the sip. Pour it neat in a copita before you commit any of it to a margarita; the first glass explains the reputation.

How to drink Fortaleza Blanco

If it does end up in a margarita, keep the recipe simple — fresh lime and a light hand on the triple sec, since a blanco this clean doesn't need much dressing up. Serve any neat pour in a rocks glass, not a shot glass, so you can actually smell it.

Good to know

Questions about this bottle

How should I serve Fortaleza Blanco?

Blanco and reposado styles hold up fine over ice, but an anejo or extra anejo is better served in a rocks glass at room temperature so the oak notes aren't muted by the cold.

What cocktails work well with Fortaleza Blanco?

It works well in a Margarita, a Paloma, or a Tequila Sunrise.

What makes Fortaleza different from other blanco tequilas?

It's made at Destilería La Fortaleza using stone-oven-cooked agave, a two-ton volcanic tahona wheel, open-wood fermentation, and double pot distillation — the same process the Sauza family used five generations ago, with nothing added afterward.
