About this bottle
Octomore 13.1 is the standard release in Bruichladdich's most heavily peated series, distilled from Scottish barley malted to 137.3 ppm and matured five years in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels. Bottled at cask strength — 59.2% ABV, 118.4 proof — it delivers a wall of campfire smoke up front that settles into vanilla, citrus, and barley sugar underneath, courtesy of the ex-bourbon wood. The finish is long, smoky, and surprisingly sweet given the phenol level. This is a whisky for peat enthusiasts who've already worked through the big Islay names and want something more extreme, not a first Scotch.
How to drink Octomore 13.1
A splash of water is worth it here — cask strength and 137.3 ppm can overwhelm the palate neat until it's cut slightly, which also lets the vanilla and citrus underneath the smoke come forward. Ice is optional but works if you want a cooler, more restrained pour.
