Ohishi Port Cask is a Japanese rice whisky from the Ohishi family's distillery in Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu — a rare style, since almost all Japanese whisky is malt or grain-based, not rice. The family has distilled rice shochu for decades and applies that base spirit to whisky-style maturation, here finished in casks that previously held port wine. The port cask adds dried fruit and a faint red-wine sweetness on top of the rice spirit's naturally soft, slightly nutty character. It's a distinctive style rather than a Scotch-style dram, closer in texture to a light, fruity grain whisky than a malt.
