About this bottle

Erstwhile's 2023 Ancestral Tobalá is a limited-release mezcal made from wild Tobalá agave (Agave potatorum) by Silverio García Luis and Epifania Gómez Mejía in Rancho Blanco Güilá, Oaxaca. It's distilled using a technique the García family revived after nearly fifty years dormant: a hollowed agave quiote stands in for the usual copper still, a method Silverio's father devised during a decades-old mezcal ban, when authorities confiscated copper equipment. Only 800 liters came out of the June 2023 batch. Expect ripe tropical fruit and sweet caramel up front, with the earthy, mineral character Tobalá is known for underneath. Bottled at 48% ABV, this is one for mezcal drinkers who want a real piece of Oaxacan production history in the bottle.

How to drink Erstwhile 2023 Ancestral Tobalá

Sip it neat in a small copita to let the tropical fruit and caramel show before the earthy Tobalá character comes through underneath. This is a bottle for tasting and comparing, not for mixing into a cocktail.
