At the summit of the Hennessy range sits Richard Hennessy, a prestige cognac assembled from the scarcest eaux-de-vie in the maison's reserves — spirits set aside across generations in the Founder's Cellar and blended in tribute to the man who founded the house in 1765. Production is genuinely tiny: no more than twelve tierçons, the historic French-oak barrels, are bottled in a year. The cognac moves in waves, with delicate florals, nutmeg and a hint of fennel on the nose, then spice, polished leather and preserved fruits returning again and again on the palate, all poured from a Baccarat crystal decanter designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. Serve it neat, in small measures, for occasions that will not come twice.
