Tishbi Vineyard Merlot comes from the Tishbi family winery at Zichron Ya'akov, a Mediterranean-climate growing area on Israel's coastal plain where long warm days give red grapes plenty of ripeness. Merlot from a climate like this lands in the plush camp rather than the lean one: fruit forward, tannins soft, nothing angular. The nose is ripe plum and blackberry with a note of cedar; the palate is round and dark-fruited with supple tannin and a touch of cocoa; the finish is smooth and medium with gentle oak. Open it an hour ahead and serve it lightly cool with roast lamb, grilled vegetables, or aged hard cheese.
