About this bottle

Ardbeg Arrrrrrrdbeg / The Ultimate is a committee-only release from Ardbeg's 2020 'End of an Era' bottling, marking the end of Mickey Heads' thirteen years as the distillery's manager. It's a 13 year old single malt, matured entirely in ex-rye casks and bottled at cask strength, 51.8% ABV, non-chill filtered. Ardbeg's signature Islay peat smoke runs through the whole dram, but the rye wood pushes it in a spicier, drier direction than the standard 10 Year — expect smoke and char up front, backed by baking spice and a lingering, warming finish. It's a whisky for committed Ardbeg drinkers who already know the house style and want to see what an unusual cask does to it.

How to drink Ardbeg Arrrrrrrdbeg / The Ultimate

Cask strength at 51.8% wants a splash of water more than most — a few drops opens up the rye spice without drowning the smoke. Neat or with that small addition is the move; save the ice for a lighter dram, since this one has the body to take dilution and reward it.

Questions about this bottle

How should cask-strength Scotch like this be served?

Cask strength whiskies are bottled without dilution, so a small amount of water — a teaspoon or two — is standard practice to open up the aromatics without losing the whisky's structure.

What cask was Arrrrrrrdbeg / The Ultimate matured in?

It was matured entirely in ex-rye casks, which push the profile in a spicier, drier direction than Ardbeg's usual ex-bourbon maturation.

Why is this release called 'End of an Era'?

The 2020 committee release marked the departure of Mickey Heads after thirteen years as Ardbeg's distillery manager, with the whisky's age statement — 13 years — chosen to match his tenure.

What is Ardbeg known for?

Ardbeg is one of Islay's most heavily peated single malt distilleries, known for intensely smoky whisky produced using traditional floor-malted, peat-dried barley.
