Ole Smoky Mandarins is a flavoured moonshine sold with whole mandarin segments sitting in the jar, from the Gatlinburg distillery that turned Tennessee moonshine into a legal, mainstream category. The corn base underneath is clean and unaged, which is exactly why it works as a carrier for fruit: nothing from a barrel gets in the way of the citrus. The nose is bright mandarin, sweet and candied; the palate is syrupy and citrus-forward, with orange sherbet over a soft grain warmth; the finish is short and sugary. Serve it straight from the freezer as a chilled shot, top it with soda over ice, and eat the fruit last.
