Templeton Rye Maple Cask Finish takes the Iowa distillery's rye and rests it in barrels that previously held maple syrup, so the sweetness comes from the wood rather than from anything added to the bottle. Rye is the right whiskey for that trick: its pepper and dill push back against the maple sugar instead of letting it flatten the whiskey out. The nose is maple sugar, vanilla and rye spice, the palate layers sweet maple over peppery grain with toffee and clove, and the finish stays warm with spice keeping the sugar honest. Pour it over one big cube, or build a maple old fashioned with a dash of aromatic bitters.
