Rare Character is a Kentucky whiskey house built around single barrels, and this one is a straight rye pulled from barrel SEG-1538-A at eight years and nine months, bottled at 122.86 proof with nothing added back. Naming the barrel and printing the exact age is the whole point: nothing here has been blended toward a house profile, so what is in the bottle is simply what that barrel became. At full strength expect dill and mint over brown sugar on the nose, a palate of rye pepper, dark caramel and dried cherry, and a long, hot finish. Add water a drop at a time, or drink it neat and slow.
