Rod and Hammer's Slo Stills Straight Rye is a rye whiskey produced by SLO Stills, a small craft distillery based in San Luis Obispo, California, not Kentucky. It's made from a mash of at least 51% rye grain and aged for at least two years in charred oak barrels. The California climate runs warmer than the Kentucky bourbon belt, which tends to push maturation a bit faster and pull more oak character out in fewer years. The whiskey shows a deep amber color with spice, oak, and caramel on the nose, carrying through to a smooth, sweet palate with rye spice up front. A solid, straightforward straight rye from a distillery better known for its Central Coast wine-country roots.
How to drink Rod and Hammer's Straight Rye
Take it neat or on the rocks to let the rye spice lead. It also builds a proper Sazerac if you want the peppery edge to carry through a stirred cocktail.
