Shibui Grain Select is a Japanese grain whisky bottled under the Shibui label, a brand that specialises in grain and malt whiskies drawn from Japanese stock. Grain whisky is made in a continuous still rather than a pot, which gives it a lighter, sweeter frame than single malt: less weight, more polish, and a texture that tends toward cream rather than smoke. The nose is vanilla, coconut and pastry; the palate is soft and creamy with butterscotch, ripe pear and toasted grain; the finish is short, clean and gently sweet. It is an easy introduction to Japanese whisky. Drink it neat, over a large cube, or in a cold soda highball.
