Stranahan's Mountain Angel 12 Year is aged a dozen years in new American oak at altitude in the Colorado Rockies, where the thin air and temperature swings cost the barrels well over 80% of their volume to evaporation before finishing in Port wine casks. That combination of long aging and Port-cask finishing pushes it well past Stranahan's standard release in depth. The nose brings caramelized stone fruit and baking spice; the palate layers berries, citrus, and vanilla; the finish carries a cigar-wrapper note through to the end. This is a sipping whiskey for someone who already knows Stranahan's and wants the distillery's oldest, most finished expression.
