Woodinville 8 Year Old Straight Rye is an extended-age release from the Washington distillery that grows its grain on a single family farm in the Columbia Valley and hauls it west over the Cascades to be mashed, distilled and barrelled. Eight years is a long stretch for American rye made outside Kentucky and Indiana, and it shows in the glass. The nose opens on rye bread, dill and dried orange; the palate carries clove, black pepper and dark caramel over a fuller, oilier body than younger ryes manage; the finish is dry, faintly minty and long. Drink it neat, or make the best Manhattan on your counter.
