About this bottle

The Yamazaki 18 Year is a Japanese single malt whisky matured for eighteen years across American oak, Spanish oak, and Japanese Mizunara casks. That three-wood marriage is what gives Suntory's flagship its depth: raisin and apricot on the nose lift into cafe au lait and the incense-like scent of Mizunara, while blackberry, strawberry jam, and dark chocolate fill the palate. The finish runs long, spicy, and smooth. Bottled at 43% ABV, it carries its age without heaviness, the Spanish oak lending sweetness and the Mizunara a distinctly Japanese aromatic edge. This is a whisky for slow, neat pours, ideally after dinner when there is time to follow each layer as it opens.

How to drink The Yamazaki 18 Year

Pour it neat after dinner and take your time — the Mizunara oak notes take a few minutes to fully open up.

Questions about this bottle

What's the best way to serve The Yamazaki 18 Year?

Neat or with a single large ice cube in a rocks glass lets the aromatics open up; a tulip-shaped glass like a Glencairn is best for nosing. Once opened, keep the bottle upright in a cool spot out of direct light — whiskey doesn't spoil, but it slowly loses aroma once the bottle is more than half empty, so it's best finished within a year or two.

What casks age The Yamazaki 18 Year?

American oak, Spanish oak, and Japanese Mizunara casks over eighteen years — the Mizunara is what gives it a distinctly Japanese, incense-like aromatic edge alongside the fruit and chocolate.

What's the mash bill in The Yamazaki 18 Year?

It's made from malted barley.

What should I know about Yamazaki?

Yamazaki, opened in 1923, is Suntory's original distillery and the first whisky distillery built in Japan.
