J.T. Meleck is a Louisiana distillery that makes vodka from long-grain rice grown on its own family farm — the grain goes from field to still without leaving the property, which is a rarer claim than most vodka labels can make. Rice gives a softer, rounder distillate than wheat or corn, and that texture is the whole argument for this bottle. The nose is faintly sweet and clean, the palate is soft and slightly viscous with steamed rice, almond and a touch of white pepper, and the finish is warm rather than sharp. Serve it very cold, neat or in a martini, where the texture has room to show.
