Coalition Kentucky Straight Rye Margaux Barriques is a sourced Kentucky rye finished by the Coalition Distilling Company, built from a blend of two-year and four-year rye stocks married in new American oak and then rested further in used French oak Margaux wine barriques. That second cask brings a red-wine sheen to a whiskey that starts out grain-forward: sweet caramel and baking spice up front, dried berry and light tannin from the wine wood underneath, and a long finish that trails off into vanilla and oak char. It is a young rye dressed up by finishing rather than age, so the spice stays bright instead of mellowing out. Good for a rye drinker who wants something a little different from the standard bottling.
