Compass Box Spice Tree is a blended malt Scotch whisky combining Highland and Speyside single malts, matured in a mix of first-fill and refill American oak, then finished in heavily toasted new French oak casks. That toasted-oak finishing move became notorious in the whisky industry — the Scotch Whisky Association objected to Compass Box's original barrel-stave technique, forcing a reformulation, and the brand turned the controversy into part of its identity. Expect cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove on the nose from the toasted oak, a spicy, sweet palate with smoke undertones, and a long, warm finish. A distinctive, spice-forward blended malt from one of Scotch's most experimental independent bottlers.
