Firme Mezcal Destilado de Mandarina & Cempasuchil 750ml

This is a destilado — a Oaxacan mezcal redistilled with mandarin and cempasuchil, the marigold that covers altars and graves during Dia de Muertos. Redistilling with fruit and flowers is an old practice rather than a novelty: the ingredients ride in the vapour instead of being infused afterwards, so what lands in the bottle is aroma and structure rather than sweetness or colour. The nose is mandarin peel and dry flowers over roasted agave; the palate is citrus, herbs and soft smoke; the finish is dry, floral and long. Sip it neat in a copita, or pour it over one big cube with a squeeze of orange.
