Stiefel's Single Barrel Straight Rye is Heritage Distilling Co.'s rye bottled from individual casks, under a label that carries the surname of the distillery's founders. Single-barrel bottling means each release keeps its own character instead of being blended toward a house average, so two bottles from different casks will not read the same. Rye leads throughout: dill, green herbs and black pepper on the nose, a palate of rye bread crust, clove and caramel with a dry, spicy middle, and a finish that tapers into oak and mint. Pour it neat first to see what the cask did, then put it into a Sazerac or a rye old fashioned with a lemon twist.
