Lagavulin Offerman Edition is the ongoing collaboration between the Islay distillery and Nick Offerman, and this eleven year old was finished in Caribbean rum casks after its time in oak. That finish is the whole point: rum casks push brown sugar, molasses and dried tropical fruit into a whisky that arrives with Lagavulin peat smoke already lit, and the two pull against each other the whole way through. The nose is smoke and warm banana bread, the palate swings between sweetness and soot, and the finish is long, ashy and quietly sweet. Drink it neat, or over one large cube if you want the sweetness to sit forward.
