Sagamore distils and blends rye in Baltimore, reviving a Maryland style that was nearly extinct by the middle of the last century, and barrel picks like this one show the distillery without the smoothing effect of large-batch blending. The nose is vanilla, orange peel and fresh mint. The palate brings cinnamon and clove over caramel, with baked apple and a grassy rye note underneath. The finish is medium-long, dry and spiced. Neat is the honest way to meet a single barrel; a Manhattan is the enjoyable one.
