The Single Malts of Scotland Director's Special Ben Nevis 27 Year is an independent bottling from Elixir Distillers, drawn from Highland malt distilled at Ben Nevis in the shadow of the mountain at Fort William. Ben Nevis makes a heavy, oily, slightly funky spirit that most blenders bury in a blend and that ages into something singular when given enough decades. The nose is tropical fruit, wax and old leather; the palate is thick, with mango, honey, toasted nuts and a savoury, almost meaty edge; the finish is long, waxy and lightly bitter. A sipping whisky in every sense. Serve it neat in a copita, with a drop of water if it needs opening.
