About this bottle

Four Roses Single Barrel is a Kentucky straight bourbon drawn one barrel at a time from the OBSV recipe. Four Roses builds it on a high-rye mash bill of 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley, married to the fruity, delicate V yeast, then bottles it at 100 proof rather than cutting it to the standard 80. Expect ripe red fruit, baking spice, and a core of caramel that leans dry instead of sweet. Because each bottle comes from one barrel, no two are identical, though the OBSV signature of cherry, clove, and a warm oak spine carries through. It drinks with more depth than its price suggests. Pour it neat to read the barrel, or over a large cube on a warm evening.

How to drink Four Roses Single Barrel

Because each barrel varies slightly, a small taste before you add anything is worth it — some pours lean fruitier, others spicier. If you do mix it, keep it simple: an Old Fashioned won't fight the OBSV character the way a sweeter cocktail might.

The Bourbon Historian
@bourbonhistorian
For decades Four Roses bourbon wasn't sold in America at all — the brand was owned abroad and the name was slapped on cheap blended whiskey domestically while the good stuff went to Europe and Japan. Getting the real bourbon back on US shelves in 2002 is one of the great restoration stories in the category. Ten recipes from two mash bills and five yeast strains; this is one barrel of one of them.
Their tasting notes Nose: apricot, clove, rose water — the yeast really does talk. Palate: bright fruit, firm spice. Finish: dry, spicy, clean.

Questions about this bottle

How should Four Roses Single Barrel be served?

Neat, to read the individual barrel's character, or over a large ice cube if you want it cooler — it holds up well either way at 100 proof.

Does Four Roses Single Barrel work in cocktails?

Yes, though something simple like an Old Fashioned is a better match than a sweeter cocktail — it won't fight the OBSV recipe's cherry and clove character.

What's the mash bill in Four Roses Single Barrel?

It's built on the OBSV recipe: 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley, fermented with Four Roses' fruity, delicate V yeast strain.

Why does each bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel taste a little different?

Because it's drawn one barrel at a time rather than blended across many barrels, so natural variation between barrels carries through to the bottle.
