Pimm's No. 1 is the original British fruit cup, a gin-based liqueur first sold in 1840 as a digestive tonic before becoming the signature drink of English summer. The base is gin, steeped with a secret blend of herbs, spices, and fruit liqueurs that give it a mild bitterness up front and a sweeter, orange-and-caramel finish. On its own it's fairly low-proof and quite sweet; it's practically never drunk neat, existing instead as the backbone of the Pimm's Cup. It's a lawn-party bottle through and through, tied to Wimbledon and English garden parties as much as to any bar menu.

How to drink Pimm's No. 1

Build a Pimm's Cup: one part Pimm's to three parts lemonade or ginger ale, poured over ice with cucumber, mint, strawberries, and orange slices. Skip sipping it neat — the fruit and mixer are what make it work.
