About this bottle

Banhez Tepeztate is a joven mezcal made from wild Tepeztate agave, a variety that can take fifteen to twenty-five years to mature in the field before it's ready to harvest. In keeping with traditional Oaxacan production, the agave hearts are cooked in an earthen pit oven, crushed by stone tahona, then fermented and distilled in pot stills. That process carries through to a smoky, earthy character with herbal and mineral notes typical of Tepeztate, bottled unaged so the agave and process speak for themselves. This is a mezcal for sipping slowly and paying attention, not for burying under a mixer.

How to drink Banhez Tepeztate

Sip it neat at room temperature in a small clay copita or wide glass to let the smoke and earthy notes open up, with a wedge of orange and a pinch of sal de gusano on the side if you want the traditional Oaxacan accompaniment. Save the mixers for a blanco tequila — this one is built to be tasted on its own.
