Overholt Straight Rye revives one of the oldest names in American whiskey, made in the Monongahela style that Pennsylvania rye was built on, where the mash leans heavily on rye rather than splitting the difference with corn. It carries a four year age statement, young enough to keep the grain loud and bright rather than sanded down by wood. Expect a nose of dill, mint and rye bread, a palate with black pepper, caramel, cocoa and a green herbal streak, and a dry, spicy finish. This is a cocktail rye more than a contemplative one. Stir it into a Manhattan or a Sazerac, or pour it neat if you like your rye sharp.
