Akido Saperavi Qvevri 2022 13% Alc/Vol 750ml

Akido Saperavi Qvevri 2022 is a Georgian red made from Saperavi, one of the few grapes in the world with red flesh as well as red skin, fermented in clay qvevri buried in the ground rather than in steel or oak. That combination gives a wine that is dark to the rim and built on fruit and structure rather than on barrel character. The nose is blackberry and damson with dried herb and a smear of black pepper. The palate is dry, firm and quite tannic, with sour cherry and an iron note running underneath, and the finish is long and savoury. Decant it, serve it slightly cool, and put it next to grilled lamb.
