Alpine Distilling's Lafayette is a spiced whiskey out of Park City, Utah, American whiskey flavoured after distillation with warm baking spice rather than left to take everything from the barrel. The category tends to live in shot glasses, but the versions that work do so because the whiskey underneath is not buried. The nose is cinnamon and clove over vanilla and toasted grain. The palate is sweet and warming, moving through baked apple, brown sugar and a peppery heat that builds across the middle, and the finish is long and spicy with an oak edge behind it. Serve it chilled as a shot, over ice with cider, or stirred into coffee on a cold morning.
