Bernheim Original is the whiskey that reintroduced American wheat whiskey to the modern shelf, and this is Heaven Hill's small batch limited edition marking twenty years of it. Where bourbon leads with corn, Bernheim leads with soft winter wheat as its primary grain, which changes the whole character of the pour: less pepper, more bakery. The nose is honey, toasted grain and soft orchard fruit. The palate follows with warm bread, butterscotch and baked apple wrapped in light oak, and the finish is rounded rather than sharp, dusted with cinnamon. Pour it neat in a glencairn to read the grain, or use it as the gentler base of an old fashioned.
