Black Feather American Straight Rye is a straight rye whiskey, which under US rules means at least fifty one percent rye in the mash and a minimum two years in new charred oak with nothing added. Rye is the grain that gives American whiskey its bite, and this leans into it. The nose is green and herbal with black pepper and a thread of vanilla underneath. The palate is dry rye spice, mint and toasted grain over gentle caramel, and the finish is crisp and peppery rather than sweet. Rye like this earns its keep behind the bar. Pour it neat if you like the spice, or build a Manhattan or a Sazerac.
