Broken Barrel Americana comes from a whiskey house that skips conventional barrel finishing and instead drops charred oak staves — what it calls the Oak Bill — straight into the spirit, so the wood does its work in weeks rather than years. The result is an American whiskey with a deliberately loud oak signature. The nose is toasted oak, vanilla and dark caramel; the palate brings baking spice, cherry and a resinous woody sweetness that sits somewhere between a bourbon and a heavily finished whiskey; the finish is dry and tannic. Pour it neat if you want to study the wood, or build a boulevardier where that oak has something bitter to push against.
