Brook Hill 14 Year is a straight bourbon selected and bottled by Rare Character Whiskey, a Louisville outfit that built its name on hunting down mature barrels and printing the details on the label rather than burying them. Fourteen years in new charred oak is a long time in Kentucky heat, and the whiskey wears those years: the nose is dark caramel, dried cherry and old library wood; the palate runs toffee, tobacco leaf, black pepper and a deep frame of oak tannin; the finish is long, dry and spiced. Drink it neat, with a few drops of water if the oak leans heavy on the first pour.
