Castle & Key Extra Old Haitian Rhum Casks 750ml

Castle & Key restored a landmark distillery outside Frankfort, Kentucky, and this release takes their older whiskey and finishes it in casks that previously held Haitian rhum. Rhum casks are an unusual choice — they tend to leave tropical fruit and a grassy sweetness behind rather than the sherry or wine notes finishing usually brings. The nose is caramel and vanilla with ripe banana and brown sugar; the palate layers baked fruit, molasses, oak and soft spice over the whiskey underneath; the finish is long, sweet and warm. Pour it neat in a Glencairn and give it time — the finishing notes build in the glass.
