Doc Swinson's Funky Drummer is a straight rye from a house that works as a blender rather than a distiller, sourcing mature barrels and marrying them into releases under its own label. That approach lets a small outfit put older, more interesting whiskey on the shelf than it could have distilled itself, and Doc Swinson's has built a following on exactly that. Rye spice, dill and dark honey open the nose; the palate turns peppery with mint, caramel and toasted grain behind it; the finish is dry and long. Drink it neat if you like rye's bite, or put it in a Manhattan where the spice can stand up to sweet vermouth.
