Empress 1908 Cucumber Lemon is a Canadian gin from Victoria Distillers on Vancouver Island, built on the brand's botanical blend and pushed toward cucumber and lemon rather than the heavy juniper of a London dry. It sits in the contemporary camp: juniper is present and accounted for, but sharing the stage with fresh, green and citrus notes instead of leading from the front. The nose is cut cucumber and lemon peel over soft pine; the palate is crisp and cooling with citrus oil, a light herbal bitterness and a rounded sweetness; the finish is short, clean and dry. Serve it in a gin and tonic with a cucumber ribbon, or shake a gimlet.
