Firkin Gin is a British gin named for the firkin, the small cask that was once a standard measure in a brewery cellar. It sits in the modern camp rather than the austere one: juniper is present and leading, as it has to be in any gin worth the name, but the rest of the botanical mix is built to be tasted rather than hidden behind tonic. The nose is juniper, citrus peel and a soft herbal edge; the palate carries pine, coriander seed and a light sweetness; the finish is clean and dry. Pour it into a gin and tonic with a wide strip of grapefruit peel, or stir a martini and let the botanicals show.
