Gold Bar Joe Montana at 90 proof is the higher-strength version of the quarterback's signature bottling, served in the brand's gold-ingot bottle out of San Francisco. Those extra eight points of proof over the standard release give the whiskey more grip: sweetness still leads, but there is a firmer oak spine underneath it. Honey, vanilla and toasted grain on the nose give way to caramel, baked apple and cinnamon on the palate, and the finish runs longer and drier than the softer bottling. It also holds its shape better in a drink at this strength. Build an old fashioned with it, or pour it neat over a single cube.
