Freestone is Joseph Phelps' Sonoma Coast project, planted a few miles from the Pacific where fog and cool air stretch the growing season and keep acidity intact. This 2021 Pinot Noir shows the site rather than the sunshine: the nose is red cherry, rose petal and damp forest floor, the palate is bright and medium-bodied with cranberry, pomegranate and a savoury, earthy edge, and the tannins are fine rather than grippy. The finish carries enough acidity to keep the fruit from sitting still. It is a food wine before it is anything else. Decant it briefly and serve just below room temperature with duck, salmon or mushrooms.
