La Venenosa Sierra Occidental Anniversary marks fifteen years of the project that put Jalisco raicilla in front of drinkers outside Mexico. The Sierra Occidental bottlings come from the western mountain tabernas, where maguey is roasted and fermented in small quantities and distilled without additives, and this release is a special selection rather than the standard run. The nose gives cooked agave, pine resin and citrus zest, the palate is concentrated and mineral with baked pear and cracked pepper, and the finish is long, dry and lightly smoky. This is a sipping bottle: neat, room temperature, in a copita, with nothing in the way of the spirit.
