This is a five year old Kentucky straight bourbon bottled under the Green Roof Doghouse label. Five years is enough time in new charred oak for a bourbon to shed its young edge and pick up real colour and structure, while keeping the grain sweetness that longer ageing eventually trades away for tannin. Expect caramel, vanilla and baked corn on the nose, a palate of brown sugar, orchard fruit and light baking spice, and a finish of dry oak with a warm, peppery tail. A straightforward Kentucky pour rather than a showpiece, and none the worse for it. Drink it neat, over a big cube, or in a proper old fashioned.
