About this bottle
Metaxa 5 Star is a Greek spirit blending aged wine distillates with Muscat wine from the Aegean islands and a secret infusion of Mediterranean botanicals — a recipe the Metaxa family has kept largely unchanged since 1888. It doesn't meet the EU's strict definition of brandy or cognac, which is why it's labeled simply as a spirit rather than either, though it's often shelved alongside brandy. Expect a sweet, fruity nose, a rounded, mellow palate of dried fruit and light spice from the wine and botanicals, and a smooth, warming finish. Bottled at 40% ABV, it's built as an easy, approachable sipper, popular across Greece as a digestif and mixed into simple highballs.
How to drink Metaxa 5 Star
Serve it over ice as Greeks often do, or mix it with cola for a Metaxa and Coke. Neat works too, but it's built more for easy, casual drinking than serious sipping.

Questions about this bottle
What's the best way to serve 5 Star?
Serve it neat or on the rocks; in Greece it's also common mixed with cola over ice.
What cocktails work well with 5 Star?
It's commonly mixed with cola over ice, though it also works in place of brandy in a Sidecar or Metaxa Sour.
Is Metaxa a brandy?
Not legally — it's a blend of aged wine distillates, wine, and Muscat wine with a proprietary botanical mix, created in 1888 by Spyros Metaxa. Because of the added wine and botanicals, it can't be labeled brandy or cognac in the EU.
