About this bottle
Bourbon rarely survives twenty years in a barrel, which is why Michter's 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon appears only when the distilling team decides certain 17-to-20-year barrels have crossed into extraordinary instead of over-oaked. Master distiller Dan McKee selects each barrel individually, and every bottle is drawn from a single one of them at 114.2 proof. Two decades in fire-charred new American oak reads as deep caramel, dark cherry, and polished leather, with sweet tobacco carrying a very long finish. Releases arrive years apart and are allocated on arrival. Skip the mixing glass entirely — this is a bourbon to pour neat, in small measures, for the people who will understand what they are holding.
How to drink Michter's 20 Year
Beyond a neat pour, consider splitting a bottle among a small group rather than drinking it solo — this is a whiskey meant to be discussed as much as tasted. A wide-bowled glass helps the tobacco and leather notes fully open.
