Old Charter Oak French Oak is a Kentucky straight bourbon from Buffalo Trace, part of a series that changes one variable at a time and lets the wood do the talking. Where nearly all bourbon matures in American white oak, this release was filled into barrels built from French oak, a tighter-grained timber with a different spice profile and far less of the coconut sweetness American drinkers are trained to expect. The result carries dark cherry and dried fig on the nose, a palate of clove, baking spice and toasted nuts over caramel, and a dry, tannic finish that lingers.
