Old Potrero Single Malt Straight Rye is made in San Francisco from one hundred percent malted rye, the grain bill American whiskey used before corn took over the country, and this bottling was released as a First Responder selection. Distilling entirely from malted rye is rare and awkward work, and it produces a whiskey unlike any Kentucky rye: spicier, drier, and closer in texture to a pot-still malt than to a bourbon-adjacent blend. The nose is mint, rye bread and dark honey; the palate is peppery and herbal, with clove, dried orange and toasted oak; the finish is long, dry and warming. Drink it neat, or let it carry a Manhattan.
